Social awareness project dedicated to people who are uniquely awesome.
Othering creates social barriers between a person or a group of people and the society. Exclusion happens through different methods such as; race, sexuality, religion, color and appearance. However, othering is not about one situation; it is about a pattern of behavior that brings down different communities or groups. Each person feel othered somehow in their life. People shouldn’t reject their differences just to be accepted members of society. We are all other, we are all unique. One of the main aims of Sub is showing everyone is different and being different is completly normal.
RESEARCH
While preparing this project, "Othering, Identity, and Recognition: The Social Exclusion of the Constructed 'Other'" by Salma AbdulMagied thesis was used as the primary source. At the same time, the "Othering, Otherness and Belonging" survey was conducted for the project, with the participation of 60 people. This survey also provided guidance on the creation of the content of the Subzine. All of these researchers were supported by mood boards, mindmaps, and keywords.
VIEW THE MOODBOARDFUNCTION
Sub is a social awareness movement aiming to reach each color and each shade of the society. "Othering, Otherness and Belonging" survey was used both to planing the main flow of the project and to study what othered people experienced firsthand. The answer to one of the survey questions, "What did you need to hear when you are the other one?" formed the poster series. The aim is to show that no matter how different the stories are, we all need similar words. In this way, fanzines and posters will create a third-person effect (like media) to decrease the feeling of loneliness.
CONCEPT
Street is a rare concept where people of all classes somehow adapt to their culture. Sub project was fueled by the concept of the street. Every person on the street has his own unique mark. Some achieve this with graffiti, while others achieve it only with footprints. With this inspiration, it was aimed to continue its stimulating meaning in the street by using the red color in the color palette
ZINE DESIGN
Zine For Subzine design, there is a totally different approach than the poster designs. Rather than attracting attention at first glance, it is aimed to attract the attention of the reader in the process. Both being a cheap medium and reflecting the street culture made it suitable for this project. The fact that it has handmade value also showed how originality and individuals differ from each other.
POSTERS
Posters are one of the main parts of the Sub. Main aim of choosing this medium is to reach different variety of people with street culture and make them stop and spending some time with the design.
