LIEBESTRAUME

BY UZAY KONUK

BRIEF

Liebestraume is a historical fiction novel, based on 19th century romantic era composer Franz Liszt's piece by the same name.

RESEARCH

Writing has always been the way I found to be the best suited for me to express myself. While listening to early 19th century romantic era composer, Franz Liszt, spesifically his Liebestraume, I found myself flirting with the idea of writing a novel based on the aforementioned piece. This idea in the back of my head quickly grew more appealing and not long after, I found myself typing away at my computer as I listened to Liebestraume on repeat. While working on my outline, I found the Regency Era of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, to be the best suited for my story; the key features of it being, a focus on marriage, attention to fashion and manners. My research process focused on trying to find a simple yet appealing way to combine important metaphors from the story and a way to show that this was a historical fiction novel, in our modern day.

FUNCTION

My aim was for my readers to use my book, as a means to get away from all the chaotic and depressing times that all of us have had to—and still are—endure. I achieved this by taking my readers back to a time where everything was much more simplistic. Taking them through a journey where my characters also had to face similar situations yet managed to enjoy the little things, life had to offer; whether it be a bag of strawberry jam biscuits, watching the sunset in a pier or sharing an intimate moment with your significant other under an oak tree. I also used line engravings to draw attention to the cover which would awaken the desire in a reader to pick my book up and run their fingers through it, which I also supported with gold foil stamping.

CONCEPT

Music is a universal language and so is love. Some of the values that all humans should internalize are; love, friendship, loyalty, adaptibilty, sacrifice, compassion and equality etc. The reader is able to find all of these in my novel, Liebestraume. My characters are constructed, based on some of the people I have met along my life. They are brave enough to break the stereotypes created by society and believable enough to pull the reader in. The scenes are carefully constructed and described, just enough for the reader to visualize them without interfering with their imagination. With the help of the simple yet carefully laid out pages, the reader is able to easily follow the flow and is able to move onto the next page without getting bored and is left feeling rewarded.

LIEBESTRAUME
