BAD DAYS LAND

BRIEF

It has been proven that reading is very important for developing childrens cognitive development and imagination at the same time. It contributes to the vocabulary knowledge and enables them to dream. However, with the visuality from television and computers entering our lives, children are losing the ability to sit through a book and read it patiently. As a result nowadays, many parents and schools are forcing children to read books. Consequently, they end up hating the idea of a book altogether and would rather watch a cartoon instead. This is why we should entegrate visuality to the book and develop its functionality. Visuality combined with the power of words, can turn traditional book styles into a hybrid, interactive learning experience. This can be done using Augmented Technology. A technology that enables to combine images with specialy designed 3D animations and sounds. Bad Days Land is a children's book combined with Augmented Reality technology.

RESEARCH

The findings of a study by Lai et al. (2015) say that 92% of participants states that AR book made learning become more interesting.

Since children are surrounded with visual tools everywhere and traditional learning styles do not appeal to them anymore, technology should be integrated to books in order to enlarge it’s borders.

The aim is to create a functional learning experience that children can enjoy at the same time.

FUNCTION

Bad Days Land uses Augmented Reality technology and makes the book come to life through a mobile app. 3D models and animations are visible and replicates the pages of the magical story.

The story, illustrations and the app are simple enough to be perceived by children who are between the ages of 7-10.

Combining the AR technology with the text, allows children to interact with the book rather than just passively reading it. The app helps improving books functional features and develops children’s perception of 3d environment.

CONCEPT

When the smart phone is pointed to the page, the applications detect the image and placed the correct 3D animation and sound. This way we can witness the pages move and come to life in front of our eyes.

Bringing the story to real life, turns a traditional medium into a joyful and engaging learning experience. This way content understanding is further developed. At the end, AR book increases motivation, engagement, and memorization.

SOCIAL MEDIA

These Instagram posts are made to show the function of the app and the book. They are going to advertise the project. The color and the typeface have been chosen to match the style of the book. They also have short descriptions for people to understand the idea.

 

POSTERS

Posters will be displayed in the bookstores to get the attention of the children and parents. They will advertise the book physically.
 

TSHIRT

The tshirt has been designed for children to wear. It will be distributed to the schools.
