LIMB

BY MAHAM SOOMRO

BRIEF

As prostheses become mass-produced, they begin to look more generic, with function being prioritized over aesthetic. This results in a loss of uniqueness and bodily autonomy for people with physical disabilities. An individual’s body is unique to them and people whose body has been replaced by these industrial machines deserve to feel the same way. Limb’s aim is to create parametrically generated prostheses covers that are unique to the individual.

By using virtual reality i hope that the players achieve full immersion and by the time they finished the game they will be talking it like an experience that they had instead of just another game that they finished.

RESEARCH

To determine my audience and have the widest reach possible, I researched about limb amputations. My research concluded that 71% of amputations are below-knee, with an increase of 41% from 1995-2020, thus, I decided to design below-knee prostheses covers. During my research I also found that visual appearance plays a factor in acceptability, with products having more adoption rate when they are aesthetically defined. Since existing prostheses cover retail websites are very specific in their design, I wanted the audience to have control over the design and so, Limb was born: a website that uses parametric design to allow users to generate unique prostheses covers.

FUNCTION

Limb allows for the generation of a prostheses covers without hassle. It is a streamlined website with an embedded 3D render of the model for the best possible viewing experience. Don’t like a design? With a click of a button, you can change that by creating a completely new cover, an infinite amount of times. This cover wraps around lower leg prostheses, giving them a unique appearance and adding personality to mass-produced machines.

CONCEPT

With parametrically generated prostheses covers, people can begin to retake control of their appearance. They can add more personality to their prosthesis, hence, improving their self-confidence.

Limb’s aim is to generate unique covers for every individual using parameters that can be altered and make them accessible with the website. These covers will be bold and will dare to stand out than be taboo.

The gap between function and aesthetic will be bridged.

WEBSITE

Limb allows you to browse an infinite number of prostheses covers through a streamlined website. Each time the “generate new” button is clicked, a different design is created to enhance the unique experience.

PRODUCT REVEAL ANIMATION

The animation reveals the product itself and the possibilities it creates, finishing with the logo and tagline to retain Limb in the viewers’ memory.

PRODUCT DESIGN & PACKAGING

To show the potential of Limb, I 3D printed the cover itself and designed the packaging around it. From the conception to the physical product itself, the experience of Limb remains unique.

POSTERS

These posters advertise the product in the state that it is made to be used. The covers are wrapped around the prostheses, boldly standing out.
