GLINT
BY ŞEYMA ÇELİKBRIEF
Autism spectrum disorder (autism) is an innate disorder within a complex spectrum, characterized by developmental differences. Autism is widely unknown to neurotypical (=not displaying autism characteristics or atypical behavior patterns) individuals. Their struggles are either misunderstood or these go unnoticed. Due to their social difficulties and communication complications, many autists are unable to explain themselves in most cases. This project will therefore help them be understood.
RESEARCH
According to Tohum Otizm (a Turkish autism society), from which I have attained most of my data regarding autism, neurodivergent (autistic) individuals showcase these properties: communication problems, rigid and repetitive behaviour, meltdowns, camouflaging and masking, obsessive interests and mesmerisation and sensory overload.
VIEW THE MOODBOARDFUNCTION
This particular work has been created to demonstrate a slight disturbance for-non autistic viewers so that they may relate. The forementioned disturbance is given through a fast-paced sequence of moving images which in turn create confusion. In addition, the narrative speech gets muddy and indistinguishable nearing the end of the animation. This overload of information hence is used for simulating a sensory overload and a resulting meltdown kind of experience for the audience.
CONCEPT
Glint is an animated autism experience talking the language of stars in which every individual is depicted as a celestial body. Despite our differences, remember we must that we all are our own little stars, trying to illuminate the surroundings. We can exist as who were are, as our special star selves. Time to let our little GLINTS free, and one day, this small sense of shimmer may grow into something greater.
FRAME BY FRAME ANIMATION
Glint is a short animation revolving around an autistic mind’s content, which leads to a disturbingly intriguing experience.
POSTERS
Three different posters have been created by using the three background colours that have been utilized within the animation. The title ‘Glint’ gets distorted with each sequence of a poster, giving a meltdown effect.
The colours’ represent:
red: danger / threats felt when amongst the society, uneasiness
yellow: the in between state, slight danger with the sprinkle of some self-control, albeit in a self-conscious state. yellow: the in between state, slight danger with the sprinkle of some self-control, albeit in a self-conscious state.
blue: serenity within the autistic mind’s individuality, within their alone time and in their ownsafe haven Over-reaction to senses is a great struggle of autists, and here it has been aimed to offer a similar experience.
Also created is a social media account on the Instagram platform. Here you can see the applications of the identity on social media.

GIF STICKERS
The gif stickers can be used on the social media platform of Instagram. Story posts having been created with the stickers can not only integrate autism into everyday lives, but can also promote the animated work.
