LIFE IN BAKU

BRIEF

Baku is a small city that goes unnoticed by the average global citizen. Those who do, often merely know the name, associating it with oil and richness that comes with it. While mineral resources are an important part of the city and the whole of Azerbaijan, such economic assets are the least of Baku’s gems. The city has a lot more to offer, from beautiful modern architecture to prehistoric landmarks. A solution is needed to boost the reputation and recognition of Baku, especially after the image of the country was damaged due to war. Assuming the lack of knowledge about Baku is at the root of the issue, a website seems to the perfect choice of a medium to tackle the problem as it is easily accessible.

RESEARCH

During the research process, I gathered data about existing travel websites as well as game-like city exploration websites. Other than that, I explored city illustration styles and collected a board of inspirations. Learning about the existing solutions, or rather, lack thereof, gave me space to generate new ideas and created the foundation on which I built my illustrative website.

FUNCTION

This website with eye-catching visual language combines my love for Baku and illustration. My choice of medium will help spread my message to people around the world. Foreigners that have never even heard the name will be able to learn about my city through exploring this website. Not only is this the most accessible medium today, but also it is a format that allows a playful and entertaining experience.

CONCEPT

I have created an illustration-based, informative website for my hometown Baku, with the aim of convincing more people to get to know the city and to travel to see it in person. The website will allow the users to visually explore the city while simultaneously learning about Baku. It will also provide local citizens a chance to view their city through illustrations and learn something new about Baku that they didn’t before. My hope is to have more people know not only the name of my city but also some additional information next time I tell them where I am from.
