BRIEF

Explore the muse behind the culturally popular artworks and join them while taking a long journey from the past to today. With the nonstop growing technology, in our time almost everything is reachable. Also with the effect of the mass-production, the masterpiece paintings can be somehow underrated. Because of that, their aura and the back stories began to disappear. It is known that now the popular culture is the base of the society, and the artworks have an undeniable place in the popular culture-in movies, shows, and music-. With the popular culture, the artworks become more and more visible to the audience. Despite the fact of that exposure, these work of arts still do not fully embraced by the society with their underlying culture and the history.

RESEARCH

Explore the Muse project started by doing a conceptual and detailed research about the artworks that are previously chosen and believed to lost their aura in this society which everything is consumed in a rapid way. That is why, I did an extensive research about these 6 artworks’ background and their representations in the popular culture. I formed a timeline for each of these works by choosing the references of the orijinal paintings that used in other forms of art such as movies, music videos or commercials in direct or indirect way.

After doing more research about the relationship between the visual & auditorial art, I decided to combine my visual output with music to give a more intense experience. This idea also supported by the episodic memory concept which differs from the semantic memory, the memory that we have about the facts. Contrary to this, forming an episodic memory is a subjective experience that can be reinforced with adding auditory input which makes the experience more personal. I made 6 distinct musics with using Ableton Live by considering the aura of the painting, the cultural background of the times that the orijinal piece was first painted, and the state of mind of the painter.

FUNCTION

The most important aim of this project is to recalling the awareness of the artworks that people might have began to lose. Also by presenting cultural references and information acquisition, the project will contribute to the participant’s knowledge. With the selected artworks’ theme based musical sounds, the user or the participant will be able to live this experience on a high level of satisfaction.

CONCEPT

Explore the Muse, is a project that displays the journey of culturally popular artworks. As a result of the mass production, many artworks became too accessible, that the aura of the works becoming to disappear. The medium of this project is a website design in addition to the experience offered with touch screen in the exhibition area. Musical background that composed for the each of the artworks, will be play during the presentation of the paintings.
