Gorgon is a storytelling animation with the goal of questioning the idea of progression by constructing metaphors of the modern society by creating a narrative story of two imaginary societies, one dystopia and the other one utopia and use their contrast by using visual narrative with an emphasis on rhythm.
After a research period for creating a story, some inspirations were We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, Dispossessed and Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, the animation films, Boy and the World and Nausicaa of the Valley. For the visualisation of the story I experimented with ink and color in order to define the visual style and created an image bank composed of drawings which I used during the animation process.
The project aims to make the audience question the ideas of progress, nature, redundancy and feel a sense of wonder towards existence as a response, against loss of meaning and redundancy.
Gorgon is based on ink drawings that tries to reflect rhythm and the relationship between order and disorder that combines storytelling with motion through animation in order to create a narrative.
The experience of the animation is audience dependent, meaning that they have the freedom to create their own experiences to an extent. To give this freedom, I created an interactive animation. Requires a webcam for emotion detection.
